How Do I Keep Ants Out of My House?
Ants are amazing creatures! Over 8000 species are known throughout the world. The Bible speaks of ants as teaching lessons about planning, preparing, and working. We can surely learn a lot from these critters.
However, we don’t want the classroom in our children’s play areas, in the cupboard, or, in fact, in the house at all. Yet, how to get rid of ants often seems to be an enigma.
Let’s examine some ways to safely and certainly keep ants out of the house. First, without the use of chemicals, much can be done to discourage their presence. Clean up food items carefully, don’t leave sweet containers out, vacuum regularly, caulk any known gaps where ants could crawl in. Ant traps are available at most hardware stores and can be effective with small problems. Also sticky strips catch the ant as it crawls across it in child-free areas. However, these techniques don’t deal with the source of the problem.
To get rid of ants, you first must get rid of the source which is the queen. This is because the colony’s life depends on her. But to get rid of the queen, you must first locate the nest. Figure out the movement of the ants. Try to figure out where they are going when they have some food item. Check for signs where ants converge in large numbers.
Now that you know where it is you can remove it. Spraying will probably be necessary to do this. Some of the common outdoor nest anticides are permethrin as a liquid or granules, carbaryl as a liquid or granules, bifenthrin as granules, cyfluthrin as granules, and acephate as a liquid. Make sure the nest is thoroughly treated as ants can dig deep into the ground and remain unaffected by some poisons. Generally gasoline, fire, water do not eliminate the problem.
Another method of keeping ants out of the house is to spray the house exterior with contact insecticides. Some common ones are carbaryl as a liquid or granules, permethrin as a liquid or granules, bifenthrin as a liquid, deltamethrin as a dust, and cyfluthrin as granules. Of course, this could be a big job and you may want to call a reliable pest control firm for this. Likewise, if the nest is in a hidden location or in a wall, help may be needed.
Another effective method is setting out bates. These are poisons that smell like food to the ant. The ants that find it take it back to the colony to share it with everyone. If this includes the queen, your problem is over. Common bates are disodium octaborate, Fipronil, sulfluramid, orthoboric acid, propoxur, and abamectin. Be sure to read the label and use as directed.
Using poisons, especially around children and pets, can be dangerous. So if the problem is serious, you will probably want to call on a reliable exterminator. They know just which one, how much, and where to use the poisons so that there will not be any danger to those you love.
