So What Does History And The Bible Teach Us That A Devotee Will Be
You aren't a Christian until you actively do something - for example a promise to God that's forever. Not just going to church on a Sunday. The martyrs of the Roman Empire knew first hand, that it meant not only casual belief, but even up to life and death.
Think about it this way, if I am going to reside in the US I am really not an a U.S. citizen - I'm still an Aussie but only live in the USA. I shall remain to be an Australian living in America until I become naturalised; this is when I have made commitments or a pledge of allegiance to that power. Subsequently that, I must abide by the laws of the land as an upright citizen, which shows a sign of my continuing dedication.
So it is to be a Christian, I am able to live believing or even pronouncing I'm a Christian, but if I've not made that commitment which is perpetual and complete, then I am not a Christian. You are not born a Christian; even if you're born into a Christian family; likewise, a person isn't lawyer because his dad is a lawyer; you cannot even become a lawyer by sitting in a court of law for many years, he becomes a barrister with much learning and dedication.
As one person put it 'Going to church does not make you a Christian any more than going to Maccas makes you a big mack'. It's all about a real, significant, life long agreement with God. And as you consider God's people down through Bible history, this is what you find.
God makes it quite clear that religion isn't an 'optional extra' just tacked onto our normal lives, it 'IS' our life (now and forever) and everything else is an 'add on'. You might say that my job is not my real job - being a Christian is my real job and my other job only pays the bills, even though I enjoy it. This is what God requires of us. Jesus declared "Whoever wants to be My disciple must put himself 2nd, and follow Me" Luke 9:23.
Genuine Christianity is a close relationship between Jesus and me, a close friendship with the mega dynamic God. He calls us to be closer to Him than any other person in the world. Matthew 22:37-38 Jesus was saying to him " You shall love the Lord with all your heart, with all of your soul, and with all your mind. This is the 1st and greatest commandment. ".
